BENGALURU: Two days ago, the family members of Vidya Jayanth, 29, a homemaker residing in JP Nagar 5th Phase in Bengaluru, was stranded in rain-hit Gurvale village near Somwarpet. She made arrangements and ensured that her 25-member family was shifted to a relief camp. She did not stop at that: To help the needy, she sent out appeals on social media.
In no time, ample relief material was mobilised.
Vidya is among the Bengalureans who have joined hands to support people in Kodagu and
Kerala. “Initially, we did not realise the gravity of the situation. We might drive to Kodagu and see how we can help,” said Yashwanth MG, Vidya’s family friend.
Volunteers busy packing relief materials Residents of Vidyaranyapura and Bommasandra, and Srigandha Kannada Yuvakara Sangha in north Bengaluru are collecting relief material from the public. “We’re in touch with people in Kodagu and also the district administration. From daily requirements to food items, we’re collecting various essentials,” said Pradeep Ramachandra, an employee of a private firm.The residents have created a WhatsApp group— Kodagu flood relief—for better coordination.
Many like Shabarish Madappa Kondira, 31, techie from JP Nagar, are helping in packaging the material. “I’m from Kodagu and my family is safe there,” he said. At Kodava Samaj in Vasanth Nagar, many volunteers have come forward to contribute items. “Three truckloads of material was sent to Kodagu on Friday,” said Nanjappa, former BSF personnel. A team of 20 doctors from Indian Medical Association, Bengaluru, is working in Madikeri.

Three truckloads of material were sent to Kodagu Good Samaritans join handsFive software engineers, Sanjay Krishnan, Navaneeth M, Nithin U, Ajas A and Sooraj B, have sent 400 boxes of relief material to Kerala. “We have tied up with Palakkad Lion’s Club,” said Sanjay Krishnan. The group started a collection point at HSR Layout Sector II and racked up over 400 boxes on Friday and Saturday. They left with the last batch of boxes and drove off to Wayanad.
Volunteers were busy packingYoung Workers’ Collective, a private organisation, is collecting material at West of Chord Road. At Bethesda AG Church in Rajajinagar, arrangements have been made to accommodate Kochi-bound passengers landing at the Bengaluru airport.
Meanwhile, KSRTC has deployed six quick response squads to help transport flood victims in Kodagu and Kerala.
